About the Congress

Lupus 2010 showcases the latest developments in the management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), including the results of the most recent clinical trials, and reports on recent discoveries on its basic causes.

It is the primary forum for worldwide interaction between leading basic researchers, opinion leaders who treat LUPUS. This will include professional and patient education programs featuring presentations from over 60 of the world’s top experts on the evolving understanding of the disease and its treatment.

The leitmotif of LUPUS 2010, appropriately for a meeting held in British Columbia, is the potlatch of the Haida and other indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest whose long cedar houses became centres for the potlatch tradition where participants were hosted and housed. Potlatch, from the Chinook “to give away” or “gift” were ceremonies where material things and song and dance were shared and distributed. Significantly, and we want this congress to capture this spirit, the status of a participant was not who had the most resources but who distributed and shared the most with the community.

Context of LUPUS 2010

LUPUS 2010 will occur in one of the most promising and challenging times. On the one hand, a generation of bright young scientists have been trained and have dedicated their lives to the understanding and treatment of SLE during one of the most un paralleled periods of discovery in the genetic and molecular basis of the disease, and the development of many novel agents.

This opportunity, however, occurs at a time the world economy downturn threatens the risk taking so necessary for discovery and the financing of the research, medical education and the delivery of both established and newly discovered therapies – all barriers to harvesting the riches for improving patients’ lives.

Objectives

Lupus 2010 objectives are to:
1. Review comprehensively the state of the science and the state of the art in SLE
2. Identify future opportunities in research
3. Identify, assemble, and facilitate the next generation of leaders and their mentoring with the current leaders in SLE
4. Reduce the cognitive, communication, and conceptual barriers between lay and professional, different disciplines and different cultures
5. Close the gap between what we know, what we do and what we could do worldwide in SLE therapeutics, medical and public education, clinical and fundamental research

A special symposium on Narrowing the Gap in the Treatment and Study of SLE Worldwide opens the Congress. It will define the state of the art for Lupus treatment in settings with constrained resources, and build a network of clinicians and scientists to disseminate knowledge and to support one another. The Scientific Program will include plenary sessions, keynote talks, concurrent and poster sessions on adult and pediatric Lupus, Meet the Professor workshops. Symposia on Lupus in the developing world, clinical trials and industry courses complete the program.

Plenary and keynote addresses will highlight the state of the art in science and therapy and year in review will give a high-level perspective on what has happened of great note. Concurrent and poster sessions will focus on the myriad of new developments by scientists from around the world. “Meet the Professor” sessions will let you quiz an expert on their favorite topic (seating is limited so register early and bring tough questions).

For patients, family members of people with Lupus and other interested consumers, the three-day program will review the latest developments in all aspects of Lupus in an understandable way for non-professionals. This will include a joint plenary session with health professionals on new treatments (please see patient program).

The meeting will introduce the leaders of the future, their work on developing improved treatment and in discovering the cause and cure of SLE. As such, the meeting will provide numerous networking opportunities for trainees and younger colleagues Our efforts at the Congress will also support the growth of international LUPUS organizations and their growing efforts to empower and enhance the participation of people with LUPUS in clinical trials.
